David Bailey transformed fashion photography and celebrity photography, reflecting the British cultural trend that was breaking down the antiquated class barriers. By capturing but also being part of this transformation, he became himself a celebrity epitomising the “swinging London” of the sixties. His work includes fashion, reportage, television commercials, books and documentaries. He had a first photographic exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery in 1971 and was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire, as part of 2001 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
